阿瑟·柯南·道尔的《巴斯克维尔的猎犬》里,有这样的句子出现:

-- When at last we reached the door and peeped through we found him crouching at the window, candle in hand, his white, intent face pressed against the pane, exactly as I had seen him two nights before.

-- The lamp beat upon his face, and so intent was it and so still that it might have been that of a clear-cut clas-sical statue, a personification of alertness and expectation.
