查尔斯·狄更斯的《圣诞颂歌》里,有这样的句子出现:

-- 'Many can't go there; and many would rather die.'

-- 'If they would rather die,' said Scrooge, 'they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population.

-- That, and its livid colour, made it horrible; but its horror seemed to be in spite of the face and beyond its con-trol, rather than a part or its own expression.
