查尔斯·狄更斯的《老古玩店》里,有这样的句子出现:

-- She put her hand in mine as confidingly as if she had known me from her cradle, and we trudged away together; the little creature accommodating her pace to mine, and rather seeming to lead and take care of me than I to be protecting her.

-- 'Why, then, I do consider myself rather so, master,' was the answer.

-- Discovering his mistake after a while, he appeared to grow rather sleepy and discontented, and had more than once suggested the propriety of an immediate departure, when the door opened, and the child herself appeared.

-- 'Say rather that he should not be,' replied the old man.

赫伯特·乔治·威尔斯的《时间机器》里,有这样的句子出现:

-- Our chairs, being his patents, embraced and caressed us rather than submitted to be sat upon, and there was that luxurious after-dinner atmosphere, when thought runs gracefully free of the trammels of precision.

-- "Our Special Correspondent in the Day after Tomorrow reports," the Journalist was saying or rather shouting when the Time Traveller came back.

刘易斯·卡罗尔的《爱丽丝漫游镜中世界》里,有这样的句子出现:

-- Or let me see suppose each punishment was to be going without a dinner: then, when the miserable day came, I should have to go without fifty dinners at once!Well, I shouldn't mind that much!I'd far rather go without them than eat them!

-- 'It seems very pretty,' she said when she had finished it, 'but it's rather hard to understand!'

-- She was getting a little giddy with so much floating in the air, and was rather glad to find herself walking again in the natural way.

-- Indeed, once, when she turned a corner rather more quickly than usual, she ran against it before she could stop herself.

-- 'It's my opinion that you never think at all,' the Rose said in a rather severe tone.

 

罗伯特·路易斯·史蒂文森的《金银岛》里,有这样的句子出现:

-- People were frightened at the time, but on looking back they rather liked it; it was a fine excitement in a quiet country life, and there was even a party of the younger men who pretended to admire him, calling him a "true sea-dog" and a "real old salt" and such like names, and saying there was the sort of man that made England terrible at sea.
