赫尔曼·梅尔维尔的《白鲸》里,有这样的句子出现:

-- There's plenty of room for two to kick about in that bed; it's an almighty big bed that.

-- I considered the matter a moment, and then up stairs we went, and I was ushered into a small room, cold as a clam, and furnished, sure enough, with a prodigious bed, almost big enough indeed for any four harpooneers to sleep abreast.

-- "Kill-e," cried Queequeg, twisting his tattooed face into an unearthly expression of disdain, "ah!him bevy small-e fish-e; Queequeg no kill-e so small-e fish-e; Queequeg kill-e big whale!"

-- cried Ahab, "aye, Queequeg, the harpoons lie all twisted and wrenched in him; aye, Daggoo, his spout is a big one, like a whole shock of wheat, and white as a pile of our Nantucket wool after the great annual sheep-shearing; aye, Tashtego, and he fan-tails like a split jib in a squall.

-- white whale, shirr!shirr! Here have I heard all their chat just now, and the white whale shirr!shirr! but spoken of once!and only this evening it makes me jingle all over like my tambourine that anaconda of an old man swore 'em in to hunt him!Oh, thou big white God aloft there somewhere in yon darkness, have mercy on this small black boy down here; preserve him from all men that have no bowels to feel fear!

查尔斯·狄更斯的《雾都孤儿》里,有这样的句子出现:

-- For a second or two, Oliver glanced up the street, and down the street, and over the way: impressed with the belief that the unknown, who had addressed him through the key -hole, had walked a few paces off, to warm himself; for nobody did he see but a big charity -boy, sitting on a post in front of the house, eating a slice of bread and butter: which he cut into wedges, the size of his mouth, with a clasp-knife, and then consumed with great dexterity.

-- The strange boy whistled; and put his arms into his pockets, as far as the big coat-sleeves would let them go.

-- thundered the Jew: shaking the Dodger so much that his keeping in the big coat at all, seemed perfectly miraculous.

-- And, swinging himself, at one jerk, clean out of the big coat, which he left in the Jew's hands, the Dodger snatched up the toasting fork, and made a pass at the merry old gentleman's waistcoat; which, if it had taken effect, would have let a little more merriment out than could have been easily replaced.

-- 'I want a boy, and he musn't be a big 'un.

丹尼尔·笛福的《鲁滨逊漂流记》里,有这样的句子出现:

-- I had no vessels to hold anything that was liquid, except two runlets, which were almost full of rum, and some glass bottles - some of the common size, and others which were case bottles, square, for the holding of water, spirits, &c. I had not so much as a pot to boil any-thing, except a great kettle, which I saved out of the ship, and which was too big for such as I desired it - viz.

-- I spent many a day to find out a great stone big enough to cut hollow, and make fit for a mortar, and could find none at all, except what was in the solid rock, and which I had no way to dig or cut out; nor indeed were the rocks in the island of hardness sufficient, but were all of a sandy, crumbling stone, which neither would bear the weight of a heavy pestle, nor would break the corn without filling it with sand.

-- So, after a great deal of time lost in searching for a stone, I gave it over, and resolved to look out for a great block of hard wood, which I found, indeed, much easier; and getting one as big as I had strength to stir, I rounded it, and formed it on the outside with my axe and hatchet, and then with the help of fire and infinite labour, made a hollow place in it, as the Indians in Brazil make their canoes.

-- It cost me near three months more to clear the inside, and work it out so as to make an exact boat of it; this I did, indeed, without fire, by mere mallet and chisel, and by the dint of hard labour, till I had brought it to be a very handsome periagua, and big enough to have carried six-and-twenty men, and conse-quently big enough to have carried me and all my cargo.

-- I had, indeed, found a tortoise on the shore, as big almost as I could lift, and had tossed it into the boat; and I had a great jar of fresh water, that is to say, one of my earthen pots; but what was all this to being driven into the vast ocean, where, to be sure, there was no shore, no mainland or island, for a thousand leagues at least?

西奥多·德莱塞的《嘉莉妹妹》里,有这样的句子出现:

-- Far away were indications of suburban towns, some big smokestacks towering high in the air.

-- "It's a big place," he said.

-- "You'd better look in those big manufacturing houses along Franklin Street and just the other side of the river," he concluded.

-- "Great big plate-glass windows and lots of clerks.

-- The big windows looked shiny and clean.

路易莎·梅·奥尔科特的《小妇人》里,有这样的句子出现:

-- They all drew to the fire, Mother in the big chair with Beth at her feet, Meg and Amy perched on either arm of the chair, and Jo leaning on the back, where no one would see any sign of emotion if the letter should happen to be touching.

-- I only meant to change the little bottle for a big one, and I gave all my money to get it, and I'm truly trying not to be selfish any more.'

-- Meg was already covering the buckwheats, and piling the bread into one big plate.

-- How the big eyes stared and the blue lips smiled as the girls went in.
